The snow and colder temperatures that arrived in Lakefield this week were very welcome by the 1st Nordic Ski team that was able to get out onto the trails through the woods, and by the SLASH hockey team that was able to get on the ice of our outdoor rink!

1st Boys’ Basketball
Coaches: Derek Doucet, Baillie Allen
It was a regular “Barn-Burner” type of game which saw LCS hosting Country Day School at home on Wednesday. These two schools are starting to form quite the rivalry having all games played in the past three years decided by a point margin of 5 or less.

CDS started in a zone, and it was quickly changed to man defence due to our big men on the inside and we controlled the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter the tide turned with CDS going up by 2 points as a result of more than eight travelling violations in the quarter.

LCS regrouped in the 3rd quarter, and retook the lead early, in large part because of the energy and enthusiasm of the fans! The sound in the gym was deafening as LCS started to pull away. A few 3 point baskets really fired up the crowd and the team, and led to LCS in control for most of the 4th quarter.

With 3:09 left in the 4th quarter, we called a time-out. Full court pressure from CDS lead to a couple of turnovers and a 12 point lead was being chipped away at. Being in bonus, meant that we were in good shape but our free throw shooting wasn't clicking. With less than a minute to go, the score was 44-40 and CDS had the ball. They came charging down the court, moved the ball around quickly and found their best shooter in the corner who hit the 3 pointer... but wait! It was waved off because he travelled... finally a break in our favour! We inbounded, were fouled and went back to the charity stripe for two free throws. We hit one, and that's how it ended - LCS on top 45 - 40, our largest margin of victory in 3 years against CDS!

It was an intense game that saw most of our players (we're carrying 16) adding valuable minutes on the floor. With better decision-making and free throws, we will be a team to be reckoned with this.

Our next home game will be on January 11, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. vs. The York School. Come out to support and cheer on these young men as they vie for a shot at the playoffs!

1st Alpine Racing
Coaches: Peter Andras, Rob Fleming
The 1st Alpine Racing team took to the slopes for the first ski of the season on December 14. All of the hard work in dry land training has paid off and the skiers had a great day on the slopes. The early season conditions were excellent and Coaches Rob Fleming and Pete Andras had a chance to see all athletes ski and work on some fine tuning of technique. The team looks promising this year. Our next outing will be following the Christmas break. We will be travelling to Horseshoe Valley Resort for our two day training camp on January 11-12. The Race season begins on Wednesday, January 18 at Mansfield Ski Club in Orono with our first Giant Slalom event of the season.

1st Snowboard Racing
Coaches: Garret Hart, Sarah Leaper, Laura King
The 1st Snowboard Racing team, led by team veterans Jake Wahlberg and Jack An, had their first day on snow Wednesday. Conditions were good for early winter and they enjoyed a chance to take their first turns of the season with their team-mates on a sunny day at Horseshoe Valley resort.  The racing season begins with a two day training camp January 11-12.  The first race for the team is Wednesday, January 18.

1st Boys’ Hockey
Coach: Ian Armstrong
Returning from Montreal after a win and a loss and with a few good practices under their belt, Lakefield College School's 1st Boys Hockey Team opened their CISAA League play with a strong 3 - 3 result against De la Salle College.

Focusing on positive puck possession and improvement in special teams execution, the boys in red and green got off to a solid start at home.  However, two quick goals by the visitors put the boys' backs against the wall.  On a power play, off of strong work down low from Sacha Mitchell and Michael Hudson, Matthew Lovick scored his first goal of the season.  Then, in the second period, the feared 'blue line' of Joe Gennaro, Zach Masciangelo and Quinn MacMillan tied the game off of Quinn's one timer just off of the crease.

Mid way through the third period, DLS took the lead again.  However, senior goalie Neven Ferguson shut the door the rest of the way as the team's best penalty killer.  Then, the blue line struck again, this time with Zach Masciangelo scoring the tying goal.

Final score LCS 3 - DLS 3.
