The 24 Hour Project

By Geoff Bemrose

Last week, more than 100 drama students from Grades 9 through 12 embarked on the ultimate challenge: writing, directing, pulling together the tech elements and performing original plays in just 24 hours!

The writers starting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14 and by the morning eight plays had been created! The Grade 12 directors assembled at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday to read and choose a script, hold auditions and cast their plays. By 9:30 a.m., all the groups were busy blocking and rehearsing their lines.  Throughout the day, each group was responsible for costumes, props, programming lighting and sound cues.

By 7:00 p.m., the curtain was raised and eight plays that didn't exist 24 hours earlier roared to life!

The audience had a great time and the students learned valuable lessons about taking risks, performing, running tech, collaboration and the creative process. All in all, the very first LCS 24 Hour Project was a great success!
