The Year of the Rooster

By Jen Horrigan

Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rooster was celebrated in fine form at LCS.  With the official date of the New Year falling over the quiet weekend, students were able to take advantage of extra time to celebrate.  On Saturday, January 28 students were invited to join the shopping trip to the Eaton Centre in Toronto and to experience a special excursion to Chinatown for New Year Celebrations.  The students who travelled to Chinatown, were treated to an abundance of food options, including a popular Mongolian Hot Pot restaurant which was deemed to be "very authentic" by the pleased students who dined there.  While in Chinatown, students visited the Lucky Moose grocery store to get fresh vegetables and meats as well as imported goods to make their own Hot Pot to share with students at school.  Amy Qian captained the shopping team and she navigated the busy grocery store looking for just the right goods.

After a fun day of shopping, food and sight seeing in Toronto, students gathered on Sunday, January 29 to cook and celebrate the New Year.  Olivia Gao ‘17 lent her culinary arts expertise to the group gathered in the OE kitchen to make and enjoy their hot pot.  With 15 students helping to create the dinner, it was a fun time for all and the hot pot, egg and tomato scramble, rice and authentic snacks were all delicious.

While it may have been a bit bleated, the New Year celebration on Thursday, February 2 with the whole school community was a big success.  Again, students joined together to decorate, cook and share a part of their culture with staff and students alike.  The Aramark staff went above and beyond in their attempts to create delicious recipes that would offer a taste of China to all.  Students helped prepare fried rice, noodles and dumplings for all to enjoy and the bubble tea station was a popular addition.  For many people, trying bubble tea was a new experience and everyone soon realized that drinking this delicious brew was not only tasty but “fun."

A special thanks to Michael Dodds and the entire Aramark staff for the extra effort and congratulations to Olivia, Amy, Rachel, Dorothy, Victoria, Teea, Ayana, Isabella, Grace and Clara who came out to help cook, decorate and serve.

Wishing everyone a healthy and prosperous year of the rooster.
