Trailblazers and Pathmakers

On Thursday, April 13, the four of us, Maddie Sheward ‘18, Betsy Macdonnell ‘18, Katie Little ’17 and Vera Wilcox were privileged with the opportunity to participate in the inaugural “Trailblazers and Pathmakers” panel discussions on women’s empowerment at the Ontario Legislature in Queens Park.  We were engaged in discussions with inspiring women panelists who spoke about the empowerment of women in our society through their own stories.

The event was hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell. We were honoured to spend the morning surrounded by women from all different professions and pursuits who were coming from such diverse backgrounds. We were able to listen to how they had worked hard to give women equal rights and break through the glass ceilings in our communities and professions. We left feeling empowered ourselves and that we too can follow our dreams and passions while also remaining dedicated to the empowerment and equal treatment of women.

Two of our favourite quotes relating to the empowerment of women as leaders:
  • “I can forgive anyone for stepping on my foot, but first, you need to get off my foot.” –Rebecca Benson
  • Dr. Amy Ramsay (first woman commissioner of the OPP) quoting Roberta Bondar - “I feel I need to be a cheerleader for women but a role model for men.”

A few things we will remember:
  • We need to lift each other up to climb
  • We don’t need to tear others down to succeed
  • You have two ears and one mouth; use them proportionally
  • Some people lead the change, others ride with the change, and many get run over by the change
  • Failure is merely a bruise not a scar
