Exploring the Art World

By Sarah Thompson

On Friday, May 5, the Grade 9 Extended French class embarked on an exciting field trip to the Art Gallery of Peterborough and St Veronus Cafe and Tap Room. The Grade 9s are currently studying social, environmental and economic issues around the world in French class, so they were looking at how art can have an impact and make a change in a society or around the world. Having studied the French play Art by Yasmina Reza in the winter term, they were primed to explore the value and meaning behind a piece of art.

We went to see Spencer J. Harrison’s exhibition entitled “Not a Freak Show: Growing up Gay in Rural Ontario.” This piece, as described by the AGP, “bears witness to the artist’s experience using the vernacular of the circus freak show to discuss both exclusion and inclusion. The work takes the form of a large circus tent that can be walked around and gathered within, acting as a catalyst for discourse and an assertion of presence. It is the first painted PhD in Canada and was completed in the fall of 2014 for Adult Education and Community Development at OISE, University of Toronto. Spencer J. Harrison was born in the south end of Peterborough in 1962.”

We were extremely fortunate to run into the artist while on our tour at the gallery. He graciously explained the meaning behind his work, his inspirations, and the importance of each detail. All the Grade 9s were intrigued by Harrison’s work, and expressed keen interest in discussing its significance. As Anna Harris said, “it was the most powerful piece of art I’ve ever seen.”

After our visit to the gallery, we enjoyed a delicious Belgian lunch at St Veronus. The students had previously done some research on the Belgian cuisine they offered at the restaurant, so it was even more exciting for them get to sample what they researched. After a fantastic lunch and some rich discussion on what we had seen at the gallery, we headed back to LCS.

The exhibition runs until June 25 and I would highly recommend going to check it out!
