Challenging Themselves

By Tim Rollwagen

Lakefield College School’s Northcote Campus contains all of the best aspects of this part of Ontario – acres of trails within cedar and deciduous forests, overgrown fields, and beautiful waterfront access on Lake Katchewanooka.  While many returning students have spent time at Northcote, it’s often covered in snow during the school’s winter carnival. This week during orientation, our Grade 11 students were able to experience its beautiful green spaces—the perfect place for the first-ever "Survivor Northcote." Students were challenged at a variety of stations that embodied the LCS motto, "mens sana in corpore sano" - a sound mind in a sound body, and the LCS values of Healthy Caring Community and Citizenship. Stations included puzzles and challenge activities based in leadership, visual arts, music, athletics and the mind. Each challenge earned the groups a tool that would later come in handy during the afternoon to build 10 picnic tables and dig five campfire pits accompanied by log benches.  Elements to support future programming at Northcote Campus and that the students can be proud to share with their peers. It was truly amazing to see our students work in teams to decipher instructions, use unfamiliar tools and successfully build all the picnic tables. With help from our amazing staff, the campfire pits were also dug and the day finished with an amazing grade-wide campfire and some delicious s’mores (marshmallow and chocolate treats) before heading back to campus and home for a well-deserved rest.

Following their productive day at Northcote, the Grade 11s, along with all the students, spent
Tuesday morning in classes and had a chance to familiarize themselves with the academic schedule. Now a three-year tradition, they spent the afternoon traveling through Peterborough on a scavenger hunt that highlighted some amazing small businesses throughout the downtown core. At each stop, teams earned a piece of a bike that they assembled at the end of their journey in order to donate to ten youth associated with the Big Brother Big Sister organization in Peterborough. Watching each group hand over their bike to their 'Little' was an emotional moment for all and all of the Grade 11 students who participated should be proud of their accomplishments during the orientation session.  They have set themselves up for a successful year at Lakefield.
