Entrepreneurial Challenges

By Darren Moffatt

This past Sunday, 12 members of the school’s Entrepreneurship Club travelled to Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby to compete in a DECA Regional Case Competition. With more than 2,000 students and 90 schools taking part, this was a significant step in the evolution of a club that is still very much in its infancy at LCS.

DECA is a global organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. It should come as no surprise that our students went above and beyond to compete at the very highest level; putting themselves in complex, high-pressure situations (1-1 presentations after only 15 minutes preparation time) and rising expertly to the challenge.

A special mention to Jeff McCaw and Paras Cheema who were both DECA Regional Event Finalists; meaning they placed in the top five of their event and have a very strong chance of making it to Provincials! I also had the pleasure of talking to Paras’ judge after the event, who described how she was “completely blown away by the charisma and general abilities of the young man that sat in front of her.” To hear such feedback about one of our students fills me with immense pride and certainly makes the early morning and long day all the more worth it!

It was a wonderful learning experience for all (including myself who was lucky enough to judge two events throughout the day) and I am sure the club will utilize this experience in future competitions.
