Athletics Action

1st Boys’ Basketball
The Albert College Panthers were in town to face off against the Lakefield College School Terrapins in the 1st Boys’ Basketball team’s season opener. The game was off to fast start with the Terrapins leading 19-4 in the first quarter, due to a high energy and efficient offensive set and LCS controlling the boards early.

The rest of the up-tempo game was back-and-forth between the two teams taking advantage of defensive breakdowns. Teezhun Wang and Abdullah Salah led the team in scoring with 14 and 15 points respectively, however, the LCS Terrapins definitely played a team game and were able to capitalize on many opportunities. We look forward to building off of this recent success this season.

Jr. Boys’ Hockey
The Jr. Boys hockey team kicked off their playing season with an exhibition match at Trinity College School (TCS) on Saturday afternoon. With a short bench, the boys came out flying in the first period with Gavin Plunkett getting the final touch on a shot from Blake Wickware to score the first goal. Shortly after, the team’s stellar power play unit made quick work of the temporary advantage (having one player more than the other team) with Wickware picking up a loose puck in tight at the net and lifting it top shelf (top of the net). The first period ended with LCS up 2-0.

TCS found their stride in the second period, stepping up their physical game and catching the LCS boys. Our goalie, James Battis, weathered the storm well, but TCS managed to battle back and finish the second period tied 2-2.

Both teams came out hitting hard in the third period, exchanging power play opportunities. TCS capitalized on the advantage and was able to net two goals in a short span. The LCS boys battled hard, but fell short ending the game at 5-2 for TCS after a late empty net goal.

Honorable mentions go out to Griffin Cudmore-Keating and Cam Costello for their thundering physical play and anchoring the defence, as well as Cole Fraser and Joey Osborne for their smooth hands and strong play at centre.

The Jr. Boys’ Hockey team will have a couple weeks to relax before seeing their next game action on Saturday, December 8 at De La Salle College in Toronto. The boys will host their home opener the following week against St. Andrew’s College on Saturday, December 15.

1st Girls’ Hockey
This past Wednesday marked the official beginning of the 1st Girls’ Hockey season at the Norwood Hockey Tournament.  The tournament hosts a collection of local teams playing in quick 30-minute-run-time games.  While the LCS girls did not win any of their games. there were notable performances from our all-star goalie Robyn-Lee Hotte and Madia McGowan. who scored her first goal of the season on a snapshot following a deft steal from the opposing defencemen.  The team continued to evolve throughout the day and by the final game, LCS narrowly lost 2-1 after relinquishing a 1-0 lead.

This tournament also marked the first game that many LCS rookies had ever played.  We are proud to have so many girls challenging themselves to try a new sport and the 1st Girls’ Hockey team is a reflection of the international nature of our school, with players hailing from six different countries.

This team has evolved since last year.  The game results are closer, and matches more tightly fought,  and our spirit remains the same.  To paraphrase the Navy SEALS motto: We never quit. We persevere and thrive on adversity. When knocked down, we get back up, every time. We draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect our teammates and to accomplish our mission. We are never out of the fight.
