1st Boys’ Hockey
After the holiday and with only one practice, coaches Gibson, Mallett and Armstrong are happy with how the 1st Boys’ Hockey team progressed through the St. Peter's Classic Tournament.  After three games, only two goals separated LCS from advancing to the play off round on Thursday.

In the opening morning game, after a very slow start against local team Holy Cross, the LCS boys were down 4 - 0 midway through the first period.  However, they held firm, fought back and were able to come within one goal of tying, only to fall 6 - 4 ( with an empty net goal).  Player of the game was Paras Cheema with a goal and an assist.

Competing in the Peterborough Memorial Centre was a treat for everyone. While playing against a strong FJ Austin team from Whitby, the team showed structure and discipline, but were unable to generate many scoring opportunities.  Jack Campbell's play gave the team a chance to win, and co-captain Joe Gennaro and Jeff McCaw shared player of the game distinction.

After a rest, the team saved its best for last with a dominant performance against St. Thomas Aquinas from Lindsay, winning 4 - 1.  Matt Neville led the way with two goals and player of the game honours.  All players found their game legs and played well both off and on the puck; the entire team felt very good about the league prospects for the balance of the season.

Jr. Boys’ Hockey
The Jr. Boys’ Hockey team got right back into the swing of things following the Christmas break by hosting their regular season home opener in Lakefield on Wednesday afternoon, a rematch versus De La Salle College (DLS).

After handing DLS a decisive 10-0 defeat in the first meeting, the LCS boys were expecting their opponents to come out strongly in the second and final regular-season meeting - and they were ready to match their intensity. Skating in front of a home crowd, they flew out of the gates with hard physical play and smart puck movement. Despite LCS controlling much of the first period, the DLS goaltender kept their team in it and held the score to just 2-0 for LCS at the end of the first frame. Goals by Cole Fraser and Joey Osborne gave The Grove boys a slim but stable lead heading into the second period.

Midway through the second, Luc Reeve and Noah Sedore scored two consecutive goals to give the boys a 4-0 lead and a bit more breathing room heading into the final period.

In the third period, LCS goaltender James Battis had his opportunity to shine, bailing out his skaters for a couple of brief defensive lapses and shutting down two consecutive breakaways to keep his shutout bid intact. Adding two more insurance markers (goals) and rounding out his hat-trick was Luc Reeve, who finished the game with a team-high 6 points (3 goals, 3 assists).

It was another strong, well-rounded showing by the team, with balanced scoring and a team-first mentality. Honorable mentions go out to Ewan Davidson who led the way with his physical play and fast skating, several times rushing the puck from his own defensive line and gaining the offensive zone, allowing our forwards to set up our systems. Griffin Cudmore-Keating and Cam Costello were again our rocks on the back end, setting the physical tone early and often, protecting the area around our net and locking down the neutral zone. John Beckett finished the game with one assist and showed his versatility as he jumped from defence to forward when the circumstances required. Always strong and reliable play from our forwards Blake Wickware, Matthew Hudon, Aidan Maltman and Gavin Plunkett gave our team the extra offensive touch and much-needed depth to keep DLS' chances at a minimum. With the clean sheet, James Battis extends his shutout streak to two games. He has yet to allow a single goal in regular season play.

The Boys (2-0-0) continue their regular season next Wednesday, January 17, as they travel to Aurora to take on St. Andrew's College in a battle between the league's top two (and only remaining undefeated) teams.

1st Girls’ Hockey
The 1st Girls' Hockey team continues to evolve and develop.  Despite a 6-0 loss to Country Day School, the game saw Lakefield produce a number of scoring chances which they should be very proud of.  Both Madia McGowan and team captain Allie Avard quickly found their legs and were able to create space in the offensive zone.  Avard's ability to drive the puck to the net and then make it back to prevent scoring chances brought the team and fans to their feet.  This game also saw veteran player, Ashley Boyes play some of the best hockey of her Lakefield career, while goalie Robyn Hotte continued to shine in net.
