1st Alpine
The 1st Alpine team had their first race of the season at Mansfield Ski club in Orono on Wednesday, January 17. Conditions were perfect despite the concerns from the rain last week! Mansfield had covered the hills with exceptional efforts to make snow and Mother Nature helped with some fresh snow. The School Trained boys (previously Level 1) without veteran Max Brandes, fared well and had an excellent start to the season. The rookie team placed 5th with Momo Maack placing 12th, Arda Basara 15th and Brent Dadds 17th.

In the highly competitive and skilled Open Athlete category (Previously Level 2) Noah Storey had a shaky first run but nailed it on his second run and was able to still finish in 6th place. We expect that Noah will be hungry next week! In the Female division, newcomer Averil Gougeon placed 7th. Finally, the Level One girls, lead by veteran Keely Matsusaki, won their race as a team! Keely placed 1st followed closely behind by Emma Durach in 4th, Alina Schlau in 5th and Emmi Matsusaki in 8th. The Alpine team will be at Sir Sam's in Haliburton for practice on Sunday to get ready for their second race at Alpine Ski Club in Collingwood this Wednesday, January 24.

1st Girls’ Hockey
The 1st Girls’ Hockey team continued to grow and evolve during their tournament this week - and while the team did not win, there were notable successes including:
  • Ashley Boyes scored her first goal of her Lakefield career - Coach Rory Gilfillan was so excited by this event that he accidentally launched his pen on to the ice
  • Allie Avard generated two breakaways and scored on both
  • Lety Adissi, Dylan Clement, Lily Coates and Hannah Smith put together gritty and tenacious shifts
  • Annie Da cleared the puck through heavy traffic
  • Kylie Lee mixed it up while playing along boards
  • Rachel Leung put in hard minutes in the defensive zone
  • Kit Wright displayed her stellar speed
  • Sarah Alexander backstopped the defence while Betsy Mcdonnell stood up for a teammate
  • Claire Campbell, Ally Lovick and Madia McGowan (who also earned two assists) served on both the power play and penalty kills
  • Paige Thompson played aggressively AND stayed out of the box
  • Robyn-Lee Hotte, consistently stellar between in goal seemed to take every shot against her as a personal attack and in the process earned both the praise of opposition coaches and the ire of opposing teams.
  • Finally, Coach April Looije continued to be the engine behind this team's improvement and chemistry.  Looije sharpened players' skates late into the Tuesday night, fixed helmets and gear throughout the day and offered sound strategy and feedback.  All of us, whether we are players or coaches, are better because of her tireless efforts.
1st Boys’ Basketball
The 1st Boys’ Basketball team travelled to King City to face off against the cyclones of Country Day School. The LCS boys came in fired up ready to take on the top ranked cyclones but unfortunately our defence failed us at times our inexperience and lack of conditioning made it difficult for us to stop the cyclones attack. CDS really pulled away in the second half and built an insurmountable lead.

Our team has learned a lot in the last two games, and we look forward to increased commitment and dedication to defence, and trust among all teammates in order to lift us out of this rut and return to solid team play from before the upcoming break.

Final score CDS 55 LCS 31.

1st Boys' Hockey
With only eight forwards, four defenseman and one goalie, the boys in red and green knew that they were going to be in tough battle against the undefeated, first place and defending champions of St. Andrew's College.

The coaches asked for an honest and heartfelt effort, a simple, cautious game plan, and disciplined play from their players.  The boys' response was outstanding. Brendan Rutherford scored LCS' only goal, assisted by Paras Cheema and Joe Gennaro. Jack Campbell was outstanding in net, earning the sincere respect from the St. Andrew's coaches.

1st Girls’ Volleyball
The 1st Girls’ Volleyball team has begun the season undefeated.  After winning against St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School before the Christmas Break 3 - 1, the girls continued their streak beating Bayview Glen School 3 - 2 and Toronto French School 3 - 0.  The girls have also played in three exhibition tournaments gaining experience and building a strong team dynamic on the court.

Captain Madi Stillman has led the team with her exceptional knowledge of the game.  Her guidance has helped the girls come together and her vicious attacks have dominated against all opponents. Kenzie McCallum's incredible serves and positive voice on the court have made a powerful impact on the team's energy. At the net, rookie Allie Madden, Jayden Julian and Janelle Lawes have made some great blocks and tips. Strong serves from Reyna Krocker, Anna Maxwell and Sophie Peters have helped pull the girls ahead during nail-biting moments. And finally, quick feet and powerful swings from Anna Rasmus, Victoria St. Onge and Nikki Cannon have gained the team many points.

The girls are off to an impressive start.  Come out to support the girls at their home game on Saturday, January 20 at 12:30 p.m.

Jr. Girls’ Volleyball
On Wednesday January 17, the Jr. Girls’ Volleyball team travelled to Toronto to face the strong TFS team. The girls played incredibly well in the first game, with points going back and forth between the teams.  Unfortunately the team had too many 'dropped balls' and that may have made the difference as we lost 25 - 21. The girls battled hard during the second game but could not come back and lost 25 - 18.  During the third and final game we lost our groove and were unable to organize plays the way we know we can, losing 25 - 8.  As has been noted with other teams, sometimes we learn more from our losses than our wins.  We know that with increased effort, focus, and determination we can turn things around when we host Ridley College on Saturday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m.
