Bell Let's Talk Day

By Janice Runza

This past week, in preparation for Bell Let's Talk day, on January 31, LCS focused on raising awareness of mental health.  Students created positive messages that were posted around the school to end the stigma associated with mental health, the importance of educating one's self, how to listen and ask how you can help someone, how to change our language when speaking about mental health and how important it is to “talk about it” and “join the conversation.”  Most of all - be kind to one another.

At LCS, our focus is to create a circle of care around students who are in need, utilizing both internal and external supports. Our approach is to listen, in a non-judgemental way, to provide inclusive care in an effort to end stigma through health promotion and education awareness, and to create a culture where everyone's story matters.

Students sold “mugs of hugs,” water bottles and bracelets with the message “Mental Health For All” on them. $1,000 was raised, all proceeds supported the Peterborough Chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.  Students will present the cheque to a representative from CMHA next month.

On Bell Let's Talk Day students sent out tweets, watched the Bell Let's Talk video, posted on Instagram, and across other social media channels in order to raise additional funding through the Bell network.  Several coaches posted pictures of their teams to show their support for raising awareness of mental health and some students used the  Bell talk “bubble” templates to post positive messages across social media. We are so proud of how the LCS community came together to support this important campaign.  Way to go LCS!
