Model United Nations Delegation

By Jennifer Browne

LCS' Model UN delegation travelled to Toronto to compete in the annual conference, University of Toronto Model United Nations (UTMUN). This conference is an international event that had 600 delegates participate this year.

We left our campus Thursday afternoon and the students were in their assigned committees by Thursday evening. Over the next four days, the group of twelve were experienced 25 hours of active debate, strategizing on behalf of their delegation. They approached both current and historical events in a diplomatic manner, always with the intention of tactically pushing their country/person into an advantageous position within the committee.

The committees which our delegation were involved in included the International Labour Organization, the UN Environmental Programme, Disarmament and International Security Committee, the UN Human Rights Committee, the UN Security Council, Reconstruction of Iraq (2004), the 69th FIFA Congress (2019), African Union and the Appanage Russia.

We would like to congratulate Eric Xia, Liam Cole, Allison Duff, Ali Hyland, Allie Madden, Gabe Gonzalez, Santiago Alfeiran, Maha Bukari, Umai Zhusupbekova, Hanna Su, Anna Maxwell and Katherine Petrasek for their hard work preparing for this conference, their commitment during the conference and for the overall success they found while in committee.

We would like to take a moment to recognize Katherine Petrasek, the delegate of Israel within the UN Environmental Programme, who received the Honorable Mention Award for her role within the committee and her contributions to the resolutions which were put forth. Congratulations, Katherine!

We would also like to recognize Anna Maxwell, the delegate of Qatar within the 69th  FIFA Congress, who received the Best Delegate Award.  Anna was the most active, well-prepared delegate within this specialized committee and, due to her country's political stance, Anna spent much of her time passionately defending her country's decisions.  This award is the most coveted award of the conference and is only given to one delegate from each committee. Congratulations, Anna!

We are so proud of our UTMUN delegates and cannot wait for the next conference!
