Test the Robot More

By Russell Gordon

This past Saturday, the Lakefield College School Robotics Team travelled to the Central Toronto VEX Robotics Provincial Qualifying tournament, held at St. Michael's College School.

Our incredibly dedicated team members (Isabelle Mao, Umai Zhusupbekova, Joven Peralta, Lyndon Hartley, Justy Lin, Matt Zhang, Yaming Cheng, Eric Zang, Nathan Jones, Octavio Diaz) have spent more than 70 hours each since mid-November working to understand the intricacies of this year’s challenge, coming up with suitable robot designs, building those robots and then programming and testing the finished products.

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

This is a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin and it rings very true for the experience of this year’s Robotics Team. The three robots entered by our team met with varying levels of success across seven qualifying matches for each robot. While none of the three robots qualified for the provincial robotics championship, it would be a mistake to measure the success of the year based on results alone. Team members wanted to win, but came away with some very valuable reflection on the reality and value of the hard deadline the qualifying tournament created.

“Lock in designs earlier next year and do not constantly change the design for a given robot.”

“Set a building deadline and stick to it.”

“Test the robot more!”

“I need to save time next year to learn how to drive the robot well.”

These resolutions and more were made as the team debriefed over a well-deserved pizza dinner after our return home from the tournament.

It’s been a privilege to work with this talented crew of students to prepare for the qualifying tournament. The team and I look forward to working on sensor programming and drivetrain designs in the weeks leading to March Break, with an eye to hitting the ground running for next year’s competition.
