Harnessing Business Skills at DECA Provincials

By Darren Moffatt

The Lakefield College School Entrepreneurship Club attended DECA Provincials this past weekend. Held at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto over two days, Paras Cheema competed in the Business Finance Services category of this prestigious competition. Paras was required to apply all his business knowledge and skills in order to compete against some of the most talented business students in the whole of Ontario.

With two oral presentations to prepare and deliver and a one-hour written exam, it is no exaggeration to suggest that Paras was pushed to the very limit of his business capabilities. Despite his best efforts, Paras was unable to secure a place at the World Championships in Atlanta this April; however, he should be very proud of himself for all that he achieved this weekend. Paras’ passion for business was infectious and it was wonderful to see him grow and develop as a business leader over the course of the two-day competition. His accomplishments should be further congratulated as the vast majority of his business knowledge and skills have come from his own personal desire and commitment to succeed. To get as far as Paras did, competing against students who have been enrolled in business courses since Grade 9, is a testament to this young man’s character and resilience. Well done Paras!

On the first day of the provincial competition, the Entrepreneurship Club was lucky enough to be invited to attend a Leadership Development Academy. This course was targeted at current Grade 10 and 11 students, who were interested in improving their business knowledge and skills for future competitions. LCS was represented by two dedicated members of the Entrepreneurship Club; Diego Santos and Cristian Cicardo. It was a great day of learning and experience for these two young business enthusiasts, who have recently set-up the LCS Pizza Delivery Service (delivering pizza freshly baked in the dining hall to students across campus). Diego and Cristian heard several keynote speeches from a variety of successful business people including Barry Fischer, a strategic financial leader, who has worked with an impressive array of companies such as Telus. They also heard from numerous representatives from the Dale Carnegie Institute who had an important message regarding the use of tech; in particular, optimizing electronic devices in business. They warned the audience not to rely too heavily on technology as they enter their chosen professions, but instead to focus on developing and strengthening the soft skills that are so valuable in the business world. Participants were implored to learn the valuable art of interacting with humans face-to-face, as opposed to easier and less personal technology platforms.

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend in which the LCS Entrepreneurship Club was able to further develop into the reputable organization that we aim to be. Next year, it is hoped that we will have significantly more participants at all levels of the DECA competition: Regionals, Provincials and even World Finals!

Finally, the Entrepreneurship Club would like to extend its gratitude to both Colin Simpson and the Robotics Club for making it financially viable for us to attend DECA Provincials.
