This Week in the Classroom

Mock Crime Scene
By Kerrie Hansler
Ms. Hansler’s Law classes travelled to Trent University to participate in a mock crime scene experience. Students took notes, photographed the scene and collected evidence (fingerprints, DNA, fibre and hair samples). Evidence collected will be analyzed in upcoming classes and presented along with their hypothesis of what happened at the scene and who the suspect is.

Outdoor Education
By Chantale Killey
Ms. Killey's Outdoor Education classes have been studying rivers - looking at erosion, whitewater features and some beautiful ice sculptures along Lake Katchewanooka. The next time the class explores the lake they will be in boats!

Continuing to Connect
By Erica Chellew
The Grade 9s and 12s connected through English class again this past week. Both groups have been asking for more time together, and made excellent use of the period. Specifically, the Grade 12 AP Lit class helped the Grade 9s with the process of writing: some 9s needed help with ideation, some with structure and some wanted to conference about what they had already written.

Feedback from the Grade 9s was that the Grade 12s helped them immensely because they listened well and offered positive encouragement. Thank you so much to the AP Lit class for offering time out of their demanding schedule. The connections you are making with the Grade 9s are making a difference.

Escaping the Box
By Kerrie Hansler
Ms. Hansler’s classes celebrated the last day of classes by working to open an escape box. Using their deductive thinking, creativity, teamwork and some grit and determination they successfully opened them all!

Grade 9 Students Get Charged for March Break
By Diane Rogers
Grade 9 students were introduced to the electricity unit that they will be studying in science when they come back from March Break. The Van der Graaf Generator was a hair-raising activity used to introduce the basic concepts of static electricity and discharge. The students were then given two enrichment challenges - working with a partner and combining their best "Battle Ships and Lego" skills, they recreated (from images only) two circuits using electromagnetism: one to make a spinning motor and a second one to make a bell ring! All bells rang - class is over for the break!
