Entertaining the Kids

By Alison McElwain

Grade 12 Drama students performed stage adaptations of Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo and A Gold Star for Zog for more than 400 local kindergarten students in the Bryan Jones Theatre.

LCS students worked together over two months to create these plays, using their knowledge of clown and physical theatre. They considered how children play make-believe and adopted that mode of play as their “style.” They created the set, the costumes and the blocking using things we found around the theatre.

The students had a busy day of performances - putting on two back-to-back matinees for the local children. Our students made authentic connections with their audience, encouraging participation from the kindergartners during the show and engaging with them afterwards.

This is the fourth year we have been lucky enough to run this project, thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor.
