Grove Society Alumni Dinner
Alumni and staff, representing six decades, came together to celebrate and remember their time at the school at the annual Grove Society Alumni Dinner in Toronto.
Riona Mohan ’09, President of the Grove Society Alumni Chapter, welcomed everyone and shared updates on the activities of the Alumni Chapter.
Anne-Marie Kee, Head of School and Foundation, spoke to the school’s year-long process to explore new strategic directions for LCS – a comprehensive process of research and engagement that has involved the entire community. Anne-Marie shared that she is leading the school and board to focus on, “..looking at our program and zeroing in on a few key things. One is the commitment to self-discovery and the other is exploratory learning. What is critical to the Lakefield experience is the word ‘experience.’ We believe that learning isn’t something that just happens in the classroom. As we know, it happens everywhere, all the time - particularly outside. The second priority for us is the connection and the commitment to the outdoors…we are coming back to what is at the heart of The Grove, and that is our spectacular campus. How can we be more intentional about using it? And the third priority is relationships and our sense of community.”
As the keynote speaker, Tony Harris ’82 shared his experiences growing up on the LCS campus and the influence the school and staff had on his life and career as a professional sports portrait and landscape artist. In celebration of their 100th anniversary, the NHL commissioned Tony to create 100 portraits of their top players. With less than one year (closer to 43 weeks) to complete, it was the most challenging project in Tony’s career to date. A project that he felt Lakefield College School helped to prepare him for: “That’s the thing about Lakefield…It was such a natural thing to combine the art and the athletics and it wasn’t even thought about being a unique thing. So, I think, for me as a kid growing up it was just something that was part of my nature and Lakefield was really instrumental in that. I talk about my dad and I talk about Richard Hayman and Bob Armstrong because these were the guys who really molded me into a sports artist.” Tony told the crowd.
After a wonderful dinner, the crowd gathered again for more reminiscing, networking and celebrations! Thank you to all of the alumni and staff for coming out!
