Harvesting Honey

On Sunday, September 23, a group of students, staff and one parent headed out to the LCS Bee yard to begin the process of harvesting this year's honey from our five beehives.  Students put on protective beekeeping suits and gloves so we could get right in with the bees, remove the honey filled frames and make sure that the hives were healthy and happy and readied for the autumn season.

Students helped with removing the honey supers from the tops of the hives and gently removing the bees so they would not be lost from their hives.  These heavy boxes of honey were transported back to the Outdoor Education kitchen where we used a special heated knife to remove the wax capping and release honey.  Students used an extractor to spin the frames and remove the honey which was then filtered twice before packaging and labelling the delicious final product.
