1st Girls’ Field Hockey

On a rather dreary Wednesday, the 1st Girls' Field Hockey team headed to Bayview Glen to compete in the Division II Field Hockey Championships. Despite the cold and damp weather, the girls were in high spirits and ready to take on their opponent.
The semi-final game had our girls up against Toronto's St. Clement's School. Despite a close season game and only a 1-0 lead at the half, the girls were able to secure a spot to the final game with a 4-1 victory over St. Clement's.
The final game saw the top two teams face off: LCS and Appleby College. The first 15 minutes of the game was a nailbiter, with no score and both teams equally advancing. However, in about the twentieth minute, LCS finally found the back of the net. And once the first goal was scored, LCS did not let up. What a game to end the season with - a 7-1 victory and an undefeated season. A truly impressive feat! This team worked diligently all season to accomplish a successful season. The numbers speak for themselves: with over 20 goals scored and only 3 goals against all season, these girls had a season they can each be proud of! GO GROVE GO!
1st Cross Country
Coaches: Rory Gilfillan, Russ Gordon
Cross-country is full of paradoxes: We are a team that trains together but races as individuals. We often run short distance at high speed in order to endure at long distance. And of course, in any race, athletes can stop at any time and yet we never do. Last week, LCS Grade 9 rookie Thomas Larson, qualified for OFSAA by placing 11th overall at the CISSA Finals. This is the first time we have sent an athlete to this event in two years. For all other athletes on this team, it marked their last race but in another paradox unique to cross country, the season is not over.
The mission now is one man and the qualities that coaches Gordon and Gilfillan witnessed this past week and throughout this season will be put to use in helping Thomas. Qualities like Mateo’s stunning kick in the final 600 meters, Hanna’s smile, Keegan’s metronome pace and quiet example, Alexis’ power, Santi’s exuberance, Ilana’s joy, Octavio’s diesel engine, Mairi’s grit, Aidan’s consistency, Charlie’s maturity and character, Shirley’s wherewithal, Wellesley’s determination, Anna’s mentoring and experience, and Ryosuke’s earnest effort.
Thomas Larson will stand at the start line by himself on November 3rd but he will not be alone.
