Beyond the Class

Leadership Program

“So many people in this community are committed to making The Grove experience exceptional for everyone. If you have an idea or want to make something happen, there are people in the community who will help you. There is really nothing you shouldn’t at least try, because so many of the awesome Grove traditions that we have come to accept now must once have started with just an idea. I think it’s important to never stop looking for ways to make LCS even better for everyone.” ~ Jake Fell ’15

Developing Tomorrow's Leaders

One of Lakefield College School’s defining characteristics is its long-held commitment to developing leadership and character in students.

The school’s focus on leadership is formalized in its Leadership, Character, Values Program (LCV) which encompasses all grade levels and is supported by grade mentors and includes intersession excursion opportunities. The LCV program focuses on four pillars of development at each grade level: The Confident Self (Grade 9), Stewardship (Grade 10), Citizenship (Grade 11) and Leadership (Grade 12).

“Our goal is to enable each of our students to develop their individual potential as self-confident and ethical leaders who are active and engaged citizens in all aspects of their lives and who are positioned to make a positive difference in whatever endeavours they choose to pursue in the future.” Peter O’Grady, Director of Student Leadership

The LCV program provides students with a set of tools for applying in all aspects of their lives, and acts as a conduit for engagement in cocurriculars, athletics, service projects, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Round Square and other programs.

Students learn to create goals and develop areas of focus in their leadership skills development and are supported by staff in ways that enable fun, learning, and reflection. This process culminates in the Grade 12 Senior-in-Charge (SIC) Program and through the School Life Class when graduating students put their skills into practice as community leaders.

“School Life Class has taught students how to work together to create events for the entire school. This involves coordinating with teachers, other student leaders, and encouraging school-wide participation. Mostly, however, it’s about cooperation and enthusiasm; it encourages enduring positivity, kindness, and presence. In the class, we come to learn about the intricacies of teams and the challenges and benefits of being young leaders.” ~ Juliet Gardner ’15

Lakefield College School's reputation for leadership development is well-founded. Our graduates have received offers of admission to exceptional postsecondary institutions from around the world, where they have followed their passions for architecture and interior design, commerce and management, economics, engineering, geomatics, hospitality, international relations, kinesiology, law, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, publishing and digital culture, the sciences and other fields.

  • Senior-in-Charge Program

Through the Senior-in-Charge (SIC) Leadership Program, every member of Lakefield College School's graduating class has an opportunity to assume a position of responsibility and to participate in the discussions, decisions, and activities that affect and enhance school life. The program allows all members of the Grade 12 class to join the staff in taking on the responsibility of upholding the values and traditions of the school. They learn to be concerned for the needs of others and to win respect through hard work and leading by example. It is a challenging experience and one that requires dedication, understanding, and compassion.

The SIC Leadership Program involves graduating students assuming a role that interests them and devoting a special effort to that area of the school as part of the overall effort to make their year the best ever. Some leadership positions involve responsibilities either outside the school community and/or working with staff in the direct administration of student behaviour.
  • The Grade Representative Program

The Grade Representative Program is another opportunity for hands-on leadership experience that promotes growth and citizenship. Each grade elects a male and female student to serve as their grade representative.

The Grade Representative's responsibilities include ensuring that the members of their grade are involved in school spirit events and have their voices heard during Grade Rep. meetings with the Co-Head Students. Grade Reps. also organize one term “Focus Event” for the community. They also serve on the Food Services Committee.
  • LCS Leadership Tree

Lakefield College School's Leadership Tree provides a visual metaphor of leadership development at The Grove and the numerous experiences and opportunities available to students.
