Walking Around the World

By Jen Horrigan

Have you wanted to travel the world but just don't have the time?  At LCS, you can do just that in the course of a lunch hour.  With 23 countries represented, Walk Around the World was a resounding success.  More than 50 students were involved in the massive task of preparing food and decorations from their home countries or the places that have truly shaped their lives.  Spices, jams, candies and other goods were brought back from March Break travels and other fresh supplies were sought out locally to create the authentic dishes that brought a taste of the world to LCS.  The weekend was spent chopping, mixing, frying, baking and decorating foods so that every member of the LCS community would have a chance to taste the foods that our students count as their favourites.

It was noted by many that the students did not rely on quick and easy recipes, many were prepared from scratch with the freshest of ingredients.  Louis Fayolle impressed many with his carefully made French crêpes and home made chocolate cake, making sure that his sous chef Emilie Norris-Roozmon followed the instructions to the letter.  Team Barbados offered a diverse menu of flying fish, macaroni pie and pumpkin fritters that made almost made people think they could hear the ocean and steel drums.  Their island friends would not be out done and Bermuda, Bahamas and Jamaica all joined in the spirit of the day with food and music that set an island tone.

New additions to Walk Around the World included Alisa Filatova and Valeriya Syrovatska representing their homeland of the Ukraine.  Ukrainian chocolates proved to not only be delicious but also educational as the wrappers all depicted varying beautiful scenes from around the country.  Our visiting exchange students joined in the fun as well.  Timon Nieuwstadt came prepared with spices and chutney to make the traditional South African dish Bobotie.  Helping Timon prepare this dish brought back good memories for Alexa Armstrong who was eager to once again taste a dish she enjoyed on her exchange.

For the second year in a row, the Mexican booth was alive with energy and good spirits.  The guacamole was fresh and the music infectious.  With dancing in the halls and piñatas revealing treats, there was definitely a Mexican Fiesta happening in Hadden Hall.  Beautiful Chinese dresses, traditional Indian attire and many colourful sports jerseys, added to the atmosphere.

The event was a celebration of us as a community and the culmination of the hard work of many.  With day families, alumni parents, former staff and current staff opening their kitchens for cooking and the dining hall staff generously storing food, re-heating and transporting food, Walk Around the World is truly an LCS community event.

Everyone has a favourite part of Walk Around the World.  For some it is getting the chance to talk about home and educate others about the culture we come from.  For others it is the chance to learn a new fact or experience a new taste.  As much as this event encourages cultural pride, it also encourages us to see the similarities between us.  Comfort food, music and friends seems to be the recipe for fun, no matter what country you come from.  At LCS, we can learn so much about different cultures from each other but we can also learn together and work with each other to celebrate our LCS community, a place we all call home.

List of countries represented at Walk Around the World 2015 were: Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Jamaica, Japan, Jewish foods from around the world, Korea, Mexico, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine and the United States of America.
