A Taste of the Big Apple

By Jen Horrigan

The May long weekend tradition of heading to the Big Apple continued this year and offered maybe the best time yet.  37 students, both day and boarding, took part in this fun trip that gives everyone a taste of the Big Apple.  After a relaxing Thursday in Peterborough and a slumber party on campus, the group headed out with an early 5:30 a.m. departure on Friday.  The bus ride provided a chance to catch up on sleep and prepare for the busy weekend.  Pent up energy was exerted when we arrived at the Citifield for the MLB New York Mets vs Milwaukee Brewers baseball game.  The atmosphere at Citifield was electric and our students fit in with their new hats, t-shirts and Mets souvenirs.

Saturday was a full day spent on the Upper West Side.  A visit to the John Lennon memorial and a stroll through Central Park started off the day before heading to the American Museum of Natural History to visit the dinosaurs, learn about the solar system and explore this famed museum.  Free time in Times Square followed and the students were wowed by the energy that flowed from the area.  Next stop was catching a performance of the Tony award nominated School of Rock.  This hit musical was the perfect show to see with jokes, great music and awe inspiring performances, the place was rocking and everyone left giving the show two thumbs up.  A group dinner at Planet Hollywood offered a chance to rest and relax while seeing props from some of Hollywood's most famous movies before capping off the night with a great open air bus tour of the city at night.  Views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building and many neighbourhoods of the city were explored and offered a sense of the city that never sleeps.

Sunday offered a mix of history, emotion and fun.  The day started with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum which offered an emotional and informative look at the day that changed America and touched people around the world.  A short walk to Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange followed, as well as a stop at Battery Park with views of the Statue of Liberty.  The afternoon brought a chance for students to explore the Upper East Side which put them at the scene of some of their favourite movies.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Tiffany's, Trump Tower, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Plaza and St Patrick's Cathedral were just some of the sights taken in during the afternoon of shopping and sight seeing.  After a chance for dinner, it was a trip to the Top of Rockefeller Centre that capped off the time in Manhattan.  With spectacular views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, photo ops were abundant from the roof of this famous building, which is also home to NBC studios.

The bus ride home, with a stop at Destiny USA shopping mall, offered a rest from a whirlwind weekend.  Students returned with great memories, some new purchases and many stories of their Big Apple adventures with their LCS friends.
