Legacy gifts are rooted in what matters most to you—and they help the students of tomorrow experience the fullness of life at Lakefield.
When you include Lakefield College School in your estate plans, you join generations of alumni, parents, and friends whose foresight strengthens our school for years to come. Your gift becomes part of Lakefield’s enduring story, ensuring that future students can discover their potential in the same joyful, immersive, and deeply human ways that shaped you or someone you love.
“Legacy giving is proactive philanthropy. It is thoughtful and deliberate, designed not to fix something, but to make things possible.” John Schumacher P ’05 ’06 ’08
A bequest is one of the simplest and most flexible ways to create a lasting impact at Lakefield. You can leave a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual gift after other commitments are honoured.
A bequest has no impact on your current finances and can be updated at any time through a simple codicil.
A life insurance policy can transform modest annual premiums into a meaningful legacy. You can name LCS as a beneficiary or transfer ownership of a paid-up policy to the school.
Depending on your choice, you may receive a tax receipt for the policy’s cash value or for premiums paid each year. This is an accessible option for donors who wish to make a significant future contribution.
Naming Lakefield as a beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF is a simple, tax-efficient way to support students. When registered assets pass directly to a charity, they can often be received tax-free, reducing the overall tax burden on your estate.
This option is easy to set up through your financial advisor and can be adjusted at any time.
Ask your advisor about updating your beneficiary designation.
Endowment Gifts
An endowment creates a permanent source of support for Lakefield—funding scholarships, programs, school life or an area close to your heart.
Endowments can be established during your lifetime or through your estate, and donors receive annual stewardship updates showing the impact of their fund.
Create a scholarship or bursary in your name, or honour someone meaningful to you. Your gift directly supports deserving students and opens doors that may not otherwise exist.
Recognition opportunities are available, including membership in the Mackenzie Society.
Your legacy decisions are deeply personal. Your family and priorities will always come first, and we will honour your privacy and intentions with great care. We’re here to walk with you at your own pace—confidentially, respectfully, and without obligation.
Is there a minimum amount required for a legacy gift?
No. Every bequest, of any size, is meaningful and deeply appreciated. We’ve received gifts ranging from modest amounts to major estate commitments — all make a difference for future students.
Can I change my plans later?
Absolutely. A bequest or beneficiary designation can be updated at any time. Many donors make a simple change through a codicil or by updating their financial account instructions.
Can my legacy gift be anonymous?
Yes. We are honoured to recognize donors publicly through the 1879 Society, but many choose to give anonymously. You can decide what feels right for you.
What information does my lawyer or advisor need?
Most legacy gifts require only our legal name and charitable registration number.
