Adventure, Discovery and Global Learning: LCS Students Travel to Australia for Round Square International Conference

What can we learn from the past to help shape a better future? This question was at the heart of the 2026 Round Square International Conference, where LCS students joined approximately 1,200 students and educators from around the world in Sydney, Australia, from September 28 to October 3.

Hosted by Barker College, the conference centred on the theme Visions of the Future from an Ancient Land. The programme invited students to explore Australia's rich history and cultural heritage, consider the perspectives that shape its present, and reflect on how they can contribute to the future of their communities and the wider world. Through cultural experiences, collaborative challenges and service initiatives, students put Round Square's IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service into practice.

For LCS students, the conference was part of a broader two-week learning experience in Australia from September 21 to October 3. The journey began in Cairns, where students explored the Daintree Rainforest, visited the mountain village of Kuranda and snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef, gaining firsthand experience of Australia's remarkable landscapes and the importance of protecting them.

In Sydney, students stayed with local Australian families, gaining a personal perspective on everyday life and culture. They also took part in a conference service activity sorting donated clothing for reuse, donation or resale, prompting reflection on textile waste, sustainability and the impact of everyday choices.

One of the trip's biggest highlights was the Sydney Urban Challenge, an Amazing Race-style competition that sent teams across the city by train, ferry and light rail to solve clues, complete challenges and discover iconic landmarks. Working alongside students from two other schools, the LCS group won the challenge among approximately 1,200 student participants!

From exploring Australia's natural wonders to connecting with peers from around the world, the experience encouraged students to embrace new perspectives, collaborate across cultures and consider their role in shaping the future. They returned to LCS with lasting memories, new friendships and a deeper appreciation for the learning that happens when we step beyond the classroom.
