LCS offers students the unique opportunity to take part in two types of exchanges, through either the full-term, Grade 10 Exchange Program or the three-week, March Break Language Exchange Program.
Lakefield College School’s membership in Round Square makes it possible for our Grade 10 students to participate in – typically 6 to 10 weeks - exchanges with students from more than 180 Round Square (and a few non-Round Square) schools around the world. LCS Grade 9 students who attain a minimum overall average of 85% on their February report cards may be eligible for immediate acceptance to the Grade 10 Exchange Program the following year. This is contingent on their application being approved by the Global Learning Committee, which takes into consideration the confidential reference students receive from both their advisor and head of house, as well as other factors. Students who attain an overall average of 82 – 84% on their Grade 9 February report card may be granted conditional acceptance for the Grade 10 Exchange Program, pending receipt of their final marks in June.
The March Break Language Exchanges are open to any student in Grades 10, 11 or 12 who is currently enrolled in either a French or Spanish course at LCS. The selection process is similar to that for the Grade 10 Exchange Program, although there is no academic requirement to participate in a language exchange, since it takes place mostly over the March Break. Participating students have the opportunity to visit one of our two, long-standing host schools, in either Senlis (a picturesque town about 40 km north of Paris, France) or Madrid, Spain’s historic and beautiful capital city. In return, LCS students will host their visiting exchange partners, either in residence or for a home-stay, for three weeks immediately before or after the LCS March Break.
The March Break Language exchanges to France and Spain are promoted early in the school year, and the deadline for applications is usually the day students return from Thanksgiving Break in October. The Grade 10 Exchange Program is typically introduced to Grade 9 students in December or January and applications are due the last week of February.
