Spotlight on Team Racing Sailing

Team Racing Sailing athletes have been taking full advantage of the sunny skies and beautiful waterfront to get out on Lake Katchewanooka and participate in our first races.

What is Team Racing Sailing?
Team Sailing is an event where three boats from one team work in a coordinated effort to best three boats from another team. This means they have to work together to hold off the opposition and advance their boats through the course. It requires solid sailing skills and a different set of racing tactics than competitors would use for long course sailing. Team work, communication and strategy are all part of the team racing experience.

Team Racing really puts the priority of working together in a strategic way as the first priority on the race course. As a team of three, you are truly only as good as your slowest boat. You have to work to make everyone better sailors and racers to find success.

This type of racing is best suited to shorter courses and is a great spectator sport. Traditional sailing teams focus on improving sailing skills, but on the race course every boat fends for themselves. The Team Racing approach demands that students work together in a coordinated effort to achieve a goal. The best sailors must help their teammates across the finish line to have a collective win. Seamanship, fast-paced decision making, strategic thinking and sportsmanship are all skills we look to develop with students in the Team Racing program.

Team Racing Sailing at LCS
LCS facilities are perfect for training and hosting Team Racing Sailing events. Our investment in the waterfront restoration, boathouse remodelling and six brand new boats gives us all the tools we need to help students improve their sailing knowledge and racing skills. Our top-notch coaching makes this an exciting place to train and compete!

This year, students living in the same house are sailing together since they are in the same cohort. Students wear masks while on land and team members in a cohort may then remove their mask once they are out on the water.

This fall, students are also able earn their CANSail certification, a set of progressive learn to sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills. It allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidates key skills and solid experiences before adding complex skills.
