Legacy Giving

The 1879 Society was established to honour and recognize alumni, parents and friends who have chosen to enhance opportunities for future generations of Grove students by including Lakefield College School in their estate planning.

The Society recognizes the generosity and special foresight of those who have made a gift to provide for the school’s future. These provisions include gifts through bequests, life insurance policies, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, or the proceeds of an RRSP/RRIF.

We Would Like to Welcome You

If you have already made a legacy gift to Lakefield College School, please let us know by completing and sending us the attached form: 1879 Society Information Form.

Why Create a Legacy Gift?

Since 1879, Lakefield College School has owed its existence in part to a rich tradition of philanthropy as witnessed in the school’s wonderful campus buildings and outstanding programs. Throughout the decades, extra-ordinary levels of support have also been awarded to deserving students; over one in four who have received and continue to receive needs-based financial assistance. This level of commitment to students is unique in Canada. Based in the knowledge and understanding that the lives of deserving young people will be transformed, Lakefield College School’s vibrant financial assistance program is an extension of the commitment and caring of the school as a whole.

Committing a legacy gift to Lakefield College School—an organization that you care about—should leave you with a sense of joy and satisfaction, knowing that your support will make a significant impact on the lives of future generations at The Grove.

In fact, the best way to start thinking about legacy giving is to imagine what you want the future to be and take action to make that vision real.

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 7 frequently asked questions.

  • Why a bequest? Are there advantages?

Bequests are the easiest form of legacy giving. A bequest has absolutely no impact on your assets or cash flow during your lifetime. Your quality of life won’t change. You can change your will or bequest at any time. Your charitable bequest is an expression of what you value and demonstrates what is important to you—your sense of place, your values and the high esteem that you have for LCS.
Making a legacy gift is not so different from setting up a Christmas or university fund, or saving for your dream of retiring to a tropical paradise. Your vision of a wonderful future depends on your plans today. If you love an organization  and what it means to you—if you love The Grove—legacy giving is one way to take part in shaping its future.
  • Is there a minimum bequest amount?

No minimum is required when making a bequest.  Over the years, LCS has received a number of unique estate gifts.  One alumnus chose to provide new books to our library collection, while another designated his gift to our “next construction project” (which happened to be Hadden Hall).  Others allocate their estate gift to the area of greatest need. Everyone’s situation is different and any bequest amount is welcomed and appreciated.
  • Can I honour my family with my legacy gift?

At LCS, any gift of $100,000 or more can be permanently endowed and may be named for you or for a person who has been influential in your life. If this is something you are considering, we suggest that you contact our office to discuss your intent.
  • What is the easiest way to make a bequest to LCS?

Your lawyer can prepare a simple statement, called a codicil (**see sample below) to add your bequest to your existing will.

You can state a specific dollar amount or you can choose to give a percentage of your estate.  If you are not sure about your future circumstances, you can set up a contingency bequest, thereby ensuring that your spouse and/or family is provided for first.

If you don’t have a will, you should look into establishing one.  At that time, you can instruct your lawyer that you wish to include a charitable bequest to LCS.

    **Sample Codicil

I give to Lakefield College School/Foundation, 4391 County Road 29, Lakefield, Ontario Canada K0L 2H0 the sum of $ ____ [or % share of my estate] to be used for its general purposes.

If it is a 'holographic' will (someone does this themselves without a lawyer) two witnesses are required. If done in a lawyer's office, the lawyer will provide the witnesses.

If prepared outside of the lawyer's office, the codical can be sent with the request that the lawyer affix the codicil to their will, but  the lawyer will probably ask them to come in a put a more formalized codicil in the will.
  • I've heard I can make a gift through life insurance, how?

Life insurance is one of the most flexible legacy giving options available. Depending on your choice, you can realize significant tax advantages during your lifetime or benefit your estate later on. By donating a paid-up life insurance policy, you may receive a tax receipt for its value. If LCS is made owner and beneficiary of a new insurance policy, annual premium payments are tax deductible.
  • Are there benefits to making a planned gift that I can enjoy now?

Everyone who informs us that they have made a legacy gift automatically becomes a member of the 1879 Society.

The 1879 Society was established to recognize those who have made legacy gifts to LCS during their lifetime.  As a member, you will receive a unique 1879 Society lapel pin; and enjoy special events such as our appreciation reception; be recognized on our 1879 Society display wall (unless you prefer to remain anonymous); and most importantly, experience the joy and satisfaction of knowing that your actions will inspire others to do the same.
  • Where can I find more information?

If you are ready to discover more about the power of legacy giving, contact a member of the LCS Foundation Team at 705.652.3324 ext.349 to confidentially discuss the possibilities and benefits of making an estate gift to Lakefield College School.
