Welcome New Students!

What to Expect in The First Weeks of School: September 5-14, 2024

We are so excited that you will be joining us at LCS this fall! Preparations are well underway to welcome you to the school, and to help you feel at home at The Grove.

No doubt you have questions about the first few weeks of school. On this page, you will find information about the activities you will be engaged in in September.

We’ve designed these activities to help you get to know LCS and feel at home within our community. You’ll have time to get to know your housemates, residential staff, advisor, teachers and classmates, as well as time to become better acquainted with the broader Lakefield and Peterborough communities.

Arrival Day

List of 1 items.

  • Thursday, September 5

We look forward to welcoming you on campus on Thursday, September 5.
    • Your Head of House will be in touch with you to arrange an arrival time.
    • If you are a new boarding student, your arrival time will be scheduled between 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
    • If you are a new day student, between 10:30 - 11:00 p.m.
Our Grads (Grade 12 students) will be on campus to welcome you and help you find your way to your house where you will meet your new Head of House and Advisor. You’ll have time to unpack (if you’re a boarder), get your class schedule and your laptop (if you have ordered one from the school), and sort out your school uniform.

Once all of that is complete, you and your parents will have the chance to meet with your Head of House and other new families before you say goodbye to each other. You will then get together with the Grads and other new students in your house to get to know each other and explore your new home. There will be time in the evening to more fully unpack, learn your way around campus, and begin to make new friends.

Our hope is that by the end of the day, you will begin to feel at home at The Grove.

Feeling at HOME in our COMMUNITY

List of 2 items.

  • Tuesday, September 10 - Friday, September 13

    Grade 9 - 11s
While our Grads are in Algonquin Park, Grade 9-11 students will have the chance to participate in experiential learning opportunities with their grade on campus, in the Lakefield and Peterborough communities and further afield.

    Grade 9s
The focus of the Grade 9 September Intersession will revolve around discovering the Peterborough region, concluding with a guest speaker and an afternoon of "Camp Lakefield" at the waterfront. Grade 9 students will have ample time to familiarize themselves with both the LCS campuses—the main campus and the Northcote campus—and will also have the chance to experience a day and boarding student sleepover in their respective houses.

    Grade 10s
Grade 10 students will engage in a diverse range of team-building endeavours, immersing themselves in a Treetop Trekking adventure and spending the night in the Ganaraska Forest. They will delve into the values of community stewardship by participating in a Bike Quest collaboration with the "Big Brothers Big Sisters Agency of Peterborough". Additionally, they will have the chance to experience a day and boarding student sleepover in their respective houses.

    Grade 11s
Grade 11s will spend three days and two nights at Camp Kandalore where they will work to build deeper connections with each other while strengthening skills they will need for the year ahead. Students will participate in outdoor adventure programming and will also experience a global citizenship workshop during their stay at the camp. Additionally, they will have the chance to experience a day as a
boarding student and sleepover in their respective houses.
  • Saturday, September 14

After a sleep-in and brunch, our full community will participate in our annual Terry Fox Run and Community Celebration, wearing their Paper House Colours and competing for Paper House Points.

To allow you to be fully present and engaged with those around you during these experiences, we will be limiting cell phone usage. We will ensure that lots of photos are taken and made available. This will also be communicated to your parents ahead of time so that they are not expecting communication from you during the day. You may want to let your friends from home know this as well.

At the end of these two weeks, it is our hope that you feel at home within our community and ready to dive into learning and life at The Grove!
