What Lakefield College School Students are Reading This Summer | LCS Reads Summer 2024

Three summers ago, we keenly introduced LCS Reads Student Edition—an exciting initiative to keep our students engaged in learning throughout the summer.
At Lakefield College School, reading is not just a hobby; it's a vital skill on the path to becoming lifelong learners. It nurtures the "6 C's" of the Future-Ready Learner: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, citizenship, character, and communication. We read to gain different perspectives, develop empathy, and broaden our understanding of the world. Reading reduces stress, brings us joy, and allows us to escape into our thoughts. Above all, reading makes us better readers.
With the student edition of LCS Reads, our goal is to ignite a passion for reading among our students. Through these books, our students will embark on journeys of self-discovery, explore the world, and develop a deeper understanding of others. When they return to school in September, these shared reading experiences will spark lively and engaging discussions.
We invite you to explore the selection of titles our students will dive into this summer:
Grade 12
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

“Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.” (Simon & Schuster)

Grade 11
Educated by Tara Westover

“Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.” (Penguin Random House)

Grade 10
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

“Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.” (Penguin Random House)

Grade 9
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

“Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.” (Harper Collins)
