Intersession in Action: Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Lakefield College School, authentic learning goes beyond academics—it’s about cultivating curiosity, building resilience, and sparking confidence in every student. This week’s Intersession Day gave each grade the chance to explore these values through hands-on workshops, inspiring speakers, and meaningful experiences.
Grade 9 Our Grade 9 students focused on building self-confidence through two impactful workshops. Nancy Thompson led a character strength workshop, helping students discover and lean into their unique qualities, while the Growth, Gratitude, and Grit workshop encouraged them to embrace challenges with positivity and resilience.
Grade 10 Grade 10s began their day with an inspiring presentation from magician and motivational speaker Scott Hammell, whose storytelling and energy left a lasting impression. In the afternoon, they rotated through a series of activities that blended creativity, leadership, and movement—from Santa Claus parade planning and local stewardship brainstorming to an energetic Zumba session.
Grade 11 Like the Grade 10s, Grade 11 students were inspired in the morning by Scott Hammell’s presentation before diving into a citizenship-themed afternoon. Their workshops ranged from crafting knitted items for HUGS for Hospice and assembling care packages for the YES Shelter to making soup with Chef Evan and decorating bowls for charity. Students also connected with Indigenous culture through a Métis beading workshop and explored personal growth through an Ishi workshop.
Grade 12 Our Grade 12 students spent their day exploring the possibilities of life after LCS with tours of two university campuses. One group visited the University of Toronto while the other traveled to Queen’s University—each offering a glimpse into academic pathways and the independence that awaits them beyond graduation.
Intersession reflects more than just a day away from the classroom—it brings our values to life. These experiences remind us that learning is about developing character, practicing empathy, and building deeper connections with community. It’s in these moments of authentic experience that students discover not only what they can do, but who they can become.
