7th Annual Seb Jones ’13 Memorial Poetry Slam Highlights Student Voice and Creativity

On Friday, April 24, Lakefield College School’s theatre was filled with energy and anticipation as the 7th Annual Seb Jones ’13 Memorial Poetry Slam brought students together for an evening of spoken word.

Twelve student poets took to the stage, sharing original work that reflected creativity, vulnerability, and personal insight. Across two rounds, performances showcased the power of language, rhythm, and presence to connect with an engaged audience.

The evening opened with a sacrificial performance that set the tone for the slam and invited both judges and audience members into the spirit of participation. A spontaneous open mic segment between rounds added to the sense of community, as two students shared work outside of the competition.

Standout performances included a compelling set from Veda ’26, whose delivery brought strong presence and intention to her work, and impactful pieces from IBK ’27 that resonated deeply with the audience. After two rounds of powerful performances, Colson ’26 was named this year’s winner, with Rupert }26 earning runner-up honours.

The event was hosted by Toronto-based poet, storyteller, and filmmaker Patrick de Belen, who also led a workshop with participating poets earlier in the day, supporting them in refining their performance skills ahead of the slam. The event was produced by Sophie ’26, Student In Charge of Literary Affairs, who coordinated all aspects of the evening and opened the event as the sacrificial poet.

Now in its 7th year, the Seb Jones Memorial Poetry Slam continues to be a meaningful space for student expression at LCS.

We are grateful to the Jones family for their ongoing support of this special event that continues to honour Seb’s legacy in such a meaningful way.
