On Saturday, we were thrilled to welcome our returning students back to campus; we now have almost all of our 400 of our students at The Grove! Saturday's events, including Flourish Fiesta, Paper House games, a session on School Values led by our Co-Head Students and members of the Grade 12 School Life Class, food trucks (and more!) were the perfect end to opening week last week.
In the morning, while our returning students were greeted by friends, housemates, and faculty, our 153 new students were busy at the waterfront, enjoying the festivities offered for Flourish Fiesta.
Ms. Dalrymple led our students through the event and opened with remarks that detailed what Flourish Fiesta is all about.
“This morning, we are gathered for our Flourish Fiesta. We are calling it a fiesta because you’re going to be involved in activities that will have a festive, light-hearted feel to them.”
“[At LCS], we are very intentional about cultivating a particularly favourable environment and we strongly believe that this environment will help you grow in a healthy and vigorous way… Much of our program is infused with principles of something called ‘Positive Psychology’... Positive Psychology is not “Happy-ology”. It is not about viewing the world through rose-coloured glasses, nor is it about being the happiest person in the room or being happy all the time...It is about learning the tools, strategies, and resources to not only
THRIVE, but to be equipped with the skills to handle challenges when you face them.”
Throughout the morning, students made their way through various outdoor waterfront stations designed to teach them about the principles of Positive Psychology, including gratitude, high-quality connections, mindfulness, acts of kindness, and more. After learning about the research and science that underpinned each principle, they had the chance to try out a hands-on activity that put science into practice.
As part of the fiesta, students also ventured out in two groups to explore our beautiful forest and hiking trails. This not only encompassed the positive aspects of “forest bathing” (i.e. stress reduction, bolstered immune system, etc.), it also served as a reminder to our students that our outdoor spaces are for everyone to enjoy and can serve as a peaceful respite from busy days of academics and co-curricular activities.
It was a glorious day of sunshine, which added to the experience as students and staff connected with each other in the beautiful natural environment that we are very fortunate to enjoy at LCS.
