Celebrating Growth and Resilience: Grade 9 Canoe Trip to Northcote

From April 25–26, 2025, our Grade 9 students took part in a memorable overnight canoe trip to Northcote—an experience that marked the culmination of their Outdoor Education learning and celebrated the skills they’ve built throughout the year.

Originally planned for Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, the trip was rerouted due to storm damage and park closures. Students embraced the change with flexibility and maturity, and staff were especially proud of their ability to adapt and stay positive.

Led by Ms. Ross and Mr. Johnson’s OE class and supported by a dedicated team of staff—including trip leaders and several special guests—the students paddled 10km round-trip, set up their own campsites, cooked backcountry meals, and tackled a variety of outdoor challenges like fire-building, portaging, and shelter setup. A special birthday celebration for Aniko Kiriloff added to the festivities, with cake and laughter around the fire.

Beyond the fun and learning, students gave back by helping clear storm debris from the area—contributing to the ongoing care of the LCS community’s natural spaces.

When asked about the most memorable moments from the trip, students shared reflections that highlighted connection, perseverance, and personal growth:

“...when we gathered around the campfire as a whole class and enjoyed marshmallows and chocolates. There were stories being told by staff members that were very attractive and brought a smile to everyone's face including myself. The vibe was just amazing.” Jimmy ’28

“...being able to power through the powerful current that was in the narrow, this symbolises to me that I was able to take over and overpower something that was trying to pull me down with it, so it means a lot to me and sometimes encourages me to keep on going.” Elijah ’28

“There were multiple people on this canoe trip that I hadn't gotten the chance to talk too much with. I enjoyed having conversations that usually ended up in laughter, and I'm very glad I was able to spend more time with new people who I can now call my friends.” Indigo ’28

The trip wasn’t just a celebration—it was a reminder of the resilience, community, and personal growth that can come from time spent outdoors, and a fitting close to an incredible year of learning.
