CIS Ontario - Curriculum Leaders' Conference

By Mr. Dean Van Doleweerd

On Tuesday, October 29, LCS hosted CIS Ontario’s Fall Curriculum Leader’s Meeting. Attendees were invited to come early to enjoy additional time on campus and, particularly for those visiting for the first time, to really experience life at The Grove. Many arrived on Monday evening and were welcomed into the Head of School’s home for some time to meet and connect.
Tuesday was a classic fall day with a heavy morning fog, which made for a spectacular sunrise. Participants arrived at the waterfront in the early morning to be greeted by LCS staff who led them on a morning paddle, run, walk, and yoga.
The conference began after Chapel when all 50 school leaders from 25 different schools across Ontario gathered to hear Anne-Marie Kee discuss some of the current challenges facing school leaders. This was followed by a keynote from York University’s Dr. John Paul Grayson who has completed a fascinating study on academic skill deficiencies as they are observed at universities in Ontario. Dr. Grayson presented interesting and challenging observations directly addressing much of the work independent schools are seeking to address.
This active discussion was followed by an opportunity for these visiting school leaders to get some insight into how LCS educators are offering leadership in the areas of Positive PsychologyBuilding Thinking Classrooms in MathHarkness in a 21st Century Classroom, and Use of the College and Workplace Readiness Assessment to Measure Student Skills and Growth. Attendees enjoyed lunch and campus tours before informal afternoon discussions of shared practices and approaches to common challenges.
We are deeply thankful for the great work of Mr. Joe McRae and Mr. Derek Doucet who planned our agenda, engaged Dr. Grayson, and ensured our guests experienced LCS and engaged in thoughtful learning.
