1st Boys' Soccer

With a 7-0 win over Crestwood Prep College in the 1/4 finals on October 30, 2019, our 1st boys' soccer team felt prepared for the semi-final game against Toronto French School, hosted by Hillfield Strathallan College, on November 1, 2019.  It was a very early morning for the players, and the significant wind and cold temperatures made for an interesting bus trip to Hamilton. Unfortunately we had a slow start to the game and TFS was able to take advantage of this by scoring 2 goals early in the first half. LCS scored on a PK to make it 1-2, but despite the boys' efforts, we were not able to match the score to put the game into overtime.

The coaches are very proud of how the boys played and how they exemplified LCS characteristics and values throughout the season. Congratulations to all players, and to our Grads - you will be missed next year!

1st Girls' Basketball

By Mr. Derek Doucet

If you haven't read our last update from the quarter-finals, you may want to do just that so that you have a better context of what the 1st Girls' Basketball team was able to accomplish in the playoffs. Let's take a trip back to the 4th quarter of the semi-final against the undefeated home team, the Holy Trinity Hawks.

The roar of the crowd reaches a crescendo as the Hawks charge down the court and tie the game at 27 with 3 minutes left. On the next stand on defence, we saw our top scorer for the season Cassie Mesburis make her fifth foul of the game, the referee's whistle is barely audible over the cheers from the home team fans. We're down two starters, Tori Whittemore fouled out earlier. Our starting point guard and our top scorer on the bench and the Hawks are on a run. We took 30 seconds to gather ourselves. We have been here before. We won our quarter-final by 1 point in overtime with these two players on the bench. We repeat our tactics. On defence, we look to help, we stay home and we pack the key on a drive. On offence, we pass the ball and screen away, we read the defence and react, looking to attack the rim at all times.

Our girls take the floor in the dying minutes, a tie-game. A home team with an undefeated season has the momentum and we need a stop on defence. The Hawks are at the line for 1 free-throw line, and by some miracle, they miss both. We control the rebound and Abigayle Strano brings the ball up the floor. They move the ball around, and Abbie Murray finds herself open on the left-wing and makes the jump shot! We're up two! We get back on D, and we absolutely lock them down. We control the rebound which leads to a quick outlet pass to Catie Dobson who scores the layup in traffic, we're up by four! There's under two minutes left in the game and the Hawks are scrambling, they shoot from beyond the three-point line and miss. Fernanda Fulcherberger and Ana Jervis control the defensive rebound. We outlet the ball and move it to the wing where Enrica Geloso moves it back to Abigayle Strano who rips and dribbles to the middle of the key and sinks an 8 footer!

The momentum has swung! The opposing coach is doing her best to direct her team in the dying seconds of the final quarter, the desperation to score was uncomfortable, like watching a famish raptor chasing a mouse that ducks into a thicket. Seconds feel like days until finally, the horn sounds. We bested the first place team at home in the semis. We overcame a 23 point defeat in only other game we played against the Hawks, to beat them by 6 points. We are going to the finals!

Fast forward to the gold medal game... Country Day School got off to an early lead scoring quick points down low as our players looked to shake the lactic acid from the legs from the previous game. We were facing a zone. A type of defense that is either really effective or really disastrous with our team since we continue to chase consistency in our jump shots. CDS went up by 8 in the first quarter and we yo-yo'ed back and forth, scoring points but we just couldn't cut into the lead.

After halftime, we were digging really deep into the energy stores. We are at our best when we play an uptempo, transition-style offence and that's what we tried to do. The third quarter saw a rejuvenated Terps team as we move the ball better and showed more patience on offence. We started to decrease the lead, coming to within 4 points with a few minutes to spare...

Unfortunately, we simply ran out of gas besting the best. We lost the final by 6 points.

Basketball is a game of runs and droughts, and it's those who stay mentally strong throughout the droughts who will lead the next runs. What was magical about this group of athletes was their belief in themselves and their belief in their teammates. Their dedication to defence would make Nick Nurse proud. Coaches Doucet & Wilcox could not more proud of what this team was able to accomplish this season. Going into playoffs in 5th place and finishing 2nd is no small feat and it was made possible by the effort, the desire to improve, and the dedication to development that each player brought to every practice and every game.

Thank you 1st Girls' Basketball for a wonderful and incredibly memorable season. To our Grads... may you continue to find joy in playing the game in open gym, intramurals and into adult rec leagues. To our Grade 11s... we are very much looking forward to next season!

Stay tuned for an update and invitation to join us for two Alumni basketball games (vs. 1st Girls' and 1st Boys game) in December!!

Staff vs. Students Basketball Game

The 1st Girls' vs Staff basketball game in at least a decade!

On the bus back to Lakefield from our Silver medal game, the athletes were excited to continue their basketball prowess and take on the undefeated Staff team in what would be the first 1st Girls' vs Staff basketball game in at least a decade.

The Staff team was composed of Associate Faculty, Teachers, Nigel Chellew Doucet (10 years old) and Fitness Trainer Matt Pritchard. The game was set up in a way that had the 1st Girls playing the first four minutes of the quarter, while the Jr. Girls' Basketball team would play the second 4 minutes.

At the tip, 6'6" Lee Condon controlled the ball and we were off and running. The Staff got off to a quick lead, catching the team off guard with their youthful legs looking to outlet wide and get up the floor for easy layups. It was a frenetic pace, with both teams looking to score as quickly as possible. As legs got tired, a cherry-picking Condon was given the ball at halfcourt which led to a thunderous two-handed jam that sent the crowd into a frenzy!! After 4 minutes the Staff was up 8-2.

The Jr Girls' took the floor and the staff stuck with their game plan. Quick outlets, good ball movement and high-quality shots reigned down on the Jr's who played strong defence but just could not quell the Staff's high powered offence.

We decided to wipe the slate at halftime which led to a much more competitive second half. The 1st girls came out with something to prove and were starting to run on the staff. After four minutes, they were only down by 4.

This seemed to inspire the Jrs to follow in-step as they moved the ball around with precision, had excellent communication and scored high-quality shots. Going into the 4th quarter the lead was only 8 and the 1st Girls' were ready to tackle the challenge!

During a full eight-minute quarter, the athletes looked to get out on the run and were cutting with purpose. They scored a few good baskets but during a drought, the Staff team went on a run much like the Showtime era of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar with the Lakers in the late 70s.

The Staff team was victorious once again but seeing the athleticism from the Jr team and looking ahead to next year with the returning Srs, we may be in for a much tougher matchup at the end of next season.
