Athletics Action: Nordic Ski

By Mr. Todd Harris

This past weekend, three LCS Nordic skiers made the trek to North Bay to compete in the Ontario Cup series. The storm of the season hit North Bay Nordic on Saturday bringing 25 centimeters of snow and cold temperatures, but the trail conditions were remarkably fast and fun for everyone.

Aidan Melville in his first appearance at the Provincial level placed 33rd in the 10km Classic ski event, 34th in the 10km Skate ski event, and 32nd for the weekend based on total time in the U18 category. Aidan's efforts are especially noteworthy as he had just started working on learning to race on classic skis five days before the event and had to compete in the same field as all university, senior and masters men.

Anna Harris, a long time Provincial-level skier, also competed against all university, senior and masters women, but still posted some of her best results in the U18 category with a 19th in the 10km Skate ski event, 12th in the 10km Classic ski event, and 14th in the Pursuit event based on the combined times of the two.

Despite just coming off an injury that sidelined his Skate ski training, Thomas Larson placed 24th in the 6.5km Skate ski event for the U16 category, 18th in the 5km Classic ski event, and 23rd in the Pursuit event. Thomas had to contend with the largest and most competitive field of the weekend, but showed that nothing was going to hold him back from giving his best.

The three LCS skiers were skiing with the Kawartha Nordic Racing Team through a new partnership designed to enhance our Nordic Ski Program, to take our athletes to a new level with increased training time and greater competitive opportunities.
