Sweet Success: How Our Students Harvest Honey and Strain Beeswax
This week, our Wellness Club students got hands-on with one of nature’s sweetest rewards—honey! First they learned about this winter’s perplexing decline of the school’s bee colony, Mr Hart explained the post mortem detective work and problem solving underway to determine why the bees died. Then students were ready to roll up their sleeves to harvest honey and beeswax, combining science, curiosity, and sticky fun.
The process began with gently removing the honeycomb frames from the hive. Students uncapped the combs using knives or scrapers, revealing the golden honey inside. After the extraction: it was warmed and filtered to remove any stray bits of wax or pollen. And the tastiest part was bottling it up to take home!
By the end, everyone is walking away a little stickier and a lot more knowledgeable about bees, sustainability, and the sweet science of honey harvesting.
