Exploring Our Genetic Code: AP Biology Students Dive into DNA Analysis

On May 13, 2025, Ms. Thalen’s Grade 12 AP Biology class took part in a university-level lab experience that brought their learning to life. As part of their genetics unit, students extracted DNA from their own cells, amplified it using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and analyzed the results through gel electrophoresis.

The focus was the PV92 gene, a region on chromosome 16 with a common genetic polymorphism. By identifying whether they carried the insertion or deletion variant, students could determine their alleles and compare their results to global databases—asking the question: how representative is our class?

Throughout the lab, students used professional biotechnology tools like micropipettes, centrifuges, dry baths, and electrophoresis chambers. These are skills typically introduced in first-year university courses, giving students a valuable head start.

Beyond technical training, the experience offered a personal and ethical lens into genetic research, allowing students to reflect on diversity, identity, and scientific inquiry.

It was a day of hands-on discovery—one that showed LCS students aren’t just learning science, they’re doing it.
