Exploring Cellular Defense: LCS Medical Science Club Brings Oxidative Stress to Life
Our Medical Science Club recently hosted an engaging, hands-on demonstration that allowed students to explore how cells protect themselves from harmful molecules produced during oxidative stress. Using the well-known “elephant toothpaste” reaction—a visually striking and classroom-safe experiment—students were able to model the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, a process that occurs naturally inside living cells.
Hydrogen peroxide is produced in the human body as a by-product of normal metabolic activity. While small amounts are harmless, elevated levels can contribute to cellular damage and have been linked to increased cancer cell proliferation. Fortunately, our cells are equipped with specialized defense systems that break down hydrogen peroxide into harmless components, maintaining healthy cellular function.
Through this activity, students gained a deeper understanding of:
- How hydrogen peroxide forms inside cells
- Why it can become harmful in high concentrations
- How cellular defense mechanisms work to neutralize it
By connecting chemistry to biology in a dynamic, hands-on way, this demonstration gave students a clearer view of the processes that protect our bodies every day. It also highlighted the importance of biological reactions in maintaining health, sparking curiosity and appreciation for the science happening within us.
