Lakefield College School Hosts Community Evening with Explorer Adam Shoalts
On Tuesday April 14, LCS welcomed acclaimed Canadian explorer, historian, and author Adam Shoalts for a community speaker event in partnership with the Lakefield Horticultural Society. Students from our Outdoor Leadership Program and Outdoor Leadership Class attended the presentation as part of their learning, with reflections to be used as part of their assessment.
We’re pleased to host events like this on campus in partnership with community organizations such as the Lakefield Horticultural Society, creating opportunities for students and the wider community to come together, share stories, strengthen connections, and engage with the natural world.
Shoalts shared insights from his career as an explorer, historian, and archaeologist, including mapping remote Canadian rivers, leading expeditions for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, tracking endangered species, and completing a nearly 4,000-kilometre solo journey across the Arctic.
His talk centred on his latest book, Vanished Beyond the Map: The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell, which explores historical mystery and exploration in Canada’s North. Much of the discussion focused on the Northwest Territories, a region that also connects directly to the Irving expedition, which several attending students will participate in this summer.
The event provided students and members of the broader community with an opportunity to engage with themes of exploration, storytelling, and the natural world through the lens of Shoalts’ experiences in Canada’s North.
