Students Support Launch of Lakefield Community Comfort Centre

This spring, a group of Lakefield College School students had the opportunity to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Community Comfort Centre at Lakefield United Church — a project they helped support through this year’s Candy Grams fundraiser.

Earlier in the school year, students chose to direct Candy Grams proceeds toward the creation of the Community Comfort Centre, a space designed to support local residents during emergencies such as power outages, extreme weather events, and other community crises.

The initiative was inspired by the impact of last year’s ice storm, which left many households in the region without power for days. Families searched for warm spaces, seniors were left isolated, and many residents needed access to charging stations, internet, and essential resources. In response, local organizations, businesses, and community members came together to help establish a reliable and accessible support hub for the village.

Funds raised by LCS students contributed to resources for the centre, including emergency backup power, heating and cooling support, charging stations, and welcoming gathering spaces for community members in need.

Attending the ribbon cutting ceremony gave students the chance to see firsthand how a school fundraiser can create meaningful impact beyond campus. It also highlighted the strength of collaboration between LCS and the wider Lakefield community.

And if you look closely through the photos from the event, you may spot familiar faces from the LCS community, including LCS Old Boy Alex Ramsay ’53 and Honorary Alumna Kate Ramsay.

At LCS, service learning encourages students to recognize that even small acts of generosity can contribute to lasting change. By supporting the Community Comfort Centre, students helped invest in a resource that will continue to serve and strengthen the community for years to come.
