Fifty-three LCS students participated this year in the annual University of Waterloo Mathematics Contests! These contests are optional, and allow students who are particularly adept in mathematics, to test their skills against high school students across the country.
Both the
Canadian Open Math Contest (written in the fall) and the
Euclid contest (recently written, on April 17) are geared towards the senior student, in difficulty and content, although younger students also may enter.
The
Pascal (Grade 9), the
Cayley (Grade 10) and the
Fermat (Grade11) contests allow students to write contests suited to their grade level. Questions involve material covered in math classes, and ideas are extended so that the questions require logical thinking and problem solving skills.
Top scores in the country, and in different regions can be found on the University of Waterloo website. Contest results are available to participating students.
For more information, visit the
University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing website, or contact the Math, Science and Technology Department at Lakefield College School.
Ja Min Kim (photo), shown recently writing the Euclid Math Contest – a summary of all of the skills learned in high school mathematics courses, particularly those from the final year - was the only LCS student to write all three University of Waterloo Mathematics contests this academic year.
