1st Boys’ Hockey
Coaches: Travis Turner and Andrew Johnston
The 1st Boys’ Hockey Team spent the quiet weekend doing what they do best - playing hockey. Friday night, the team played against league rivals, Saint Andrew's College. In a tight, hard fought game, the boys exacted revenge from earlier in the season with a 2 - 1 win. Matt Higgins and Andrew Irwin scored highlight reel goals. After staying overnight in the city, the boys played a team from Cleveland, St. Edward School, and pulled off a 2 - 0 win. Once again, Irwin and Higgins accounted for the LCS goals.
Later that day, LCS faced their toughest opponent, TCS. The boys played their most inspired game of the year winning 7 to 3. Higgins scored a hat trick, Matt Stevens, Rob Selman, Greg Smith and John Hoyle scored singles. In the final on Sunday, LCS played a team from Quebec City and dropped a close decision, 4 to 3. Iain MacKenzie notched two goals, while Stevens scored one.
1st Girls’ Hockey
Coaches: Ian Armstrong, Jen Horrigan and Alex Spiridis
On Friday, January 28, the LCS 1st Girls’ Hockey Team faced the first place De La Salle Oaklands Club from Toronto.
Captain Kristy Lanigan opened the scoring with her league leading 26th goal of the season in a hard-paced first period. In the second period, De La Salle's Jackie Temei scored a power play goal to even the game at one, leading a show down in the third period for the top two teams in the league. Goal tender Celeste Hutton stopped everything De La Salle shot her way, except for a lone goal by Madeline Fulford.
Throwing everything they could at the net, on the power play and with an extra attacker, the girls in red and green could not find the back of net, falling 2 -1, ending the team's winning streak. The girls will get the weekend off before the play two away games next week at Greenwood and St. Clement's.
The SLASH (Senior League All-Star Hockey) season is well underway. A crisp clear day, the sound of ice grinding under skates and pucks slapped by wood, combined with cheers and laughter ... there is little that is more Canadian than playing hockey outside in the elements, as participants of SLASH can well attest to. SLASH is the school's recreational hockey league and is open to all LCS students regardless of ability or previous experience. The emphasis of the program has always been sportsmanship, developing abilities, and, of course, to have fun.
About 20 students are participating in SLASH this term. They have been split into three teams and are currently in the midst of their regular season, building towards our dramatic playoffs to be held at the end of February. At the present time, it is Team Red (Colin Aldis, Tim Buhr, Myles Evernden, Dario Gabbani, Jonas Greiner, David Pelino and Mr Aben) that is at the top of the standings, though it is a very tight field and anything can still happen.
