Returning to The Grove

By Stephanie Wilcox '03

This year’s Home to the Grove Reunion brought back alumni from the Class of 1961 to 2011, as we celebrated those who graduated in years ending in 1s and 6s. The morning began cool and cloudy, but as alumni began to arrive back at The Grove, the sun shone and the temperature rose. Alumni, friends, and families all arrived with smiles on their faces ready to reconnect and enjoy Fall Fair.
Alumni watched various sports games around campus, visited with faculty and staff, bid on silent auction items at the Grove Society Sale, took campus tours to see what has changed since they graduated, played in a Class Adventure Challenge (which the Class of 1981 dominated), caught up at a reception at the Head’s Residence, and enjoyed the class slideshows throughout the Alumni Dinner.
This year, I experienced Fall Fair from the other side. It was so exciting to watch alumni register online in the weeks prior to the reunion, to see the Class of 1981 plan an entire weekend reunion and enjoy every minute of it, to see the oldest alumni embraced just as wholly as those from the most recent grad class, and to hear stories from a few members from the Class of 1986 about how The Grove has changed, and yet stayed the same. It was amusing to hear stories about what LCS was like before girls and what the school was like before Mr. Hadden and during his first year as Head of School. It was also nice to share with them how the school has changed from 1986 to my graduating year (2003), and how it has changed since then until now.
It was so great to see how alumni are happy and impressed with what has physically changed at LCS, and yet the same feeling is intact. I can’t wait to catch up with alumni at next year’s reunion, and at the Alumni Receptions throughout the year.
