2nd Girls’ Field Hockey
Coaches: Melissa Rathier, Dayna Taylor
On Saturday, September 20, the 2nd Girls’ Field Hockey team made the long journey to Ridley College for their first league game of the season. After a full week of practices, the girls were excited to put their new skills to the test, in a game. An evenly matched game, the play went from end to end and both teams fought hard in the humidity. Allie Avard and Hannah Forrestell controlled the play from the midfield and kept the play in the Ridley half for much of the game. Paige Bonner and Carmen Melero played brilliantly on the right, sending the ball up to the forwards and creating offensive opportunities. Olivia Thompson, Katie Little and Rachel Harding worked hard to rush the ball to the Ridley net. The Grove had several scoring opportunities; Aikansha Chawla came closest to finding the back of the net, missing by inches. Our defensive players played strong and were supportive of Katherine Petrasek, who bravely played her first game as goalie, ever. Unfortunately Ridley was able to capitalize on their chances, while The Grove were not. The result was a defeat of 2-0. All in all, it was a wonderful showing by both new and returning players. They displayed determination and the coaches are delighted to see the development of this group over the season.
Bantam/Jr. Boys’ Soccer
Coaches: Ian Armstrong, Tayler Morencie, Katrina Brennan, Paige Frigault
On the morning of Saturday, September 20, the Bantam/Junior Boys’ Soccer team arose bright and early to depart for St. Andrew’s College at 7:00 a.m. The players were split into even squads to take on two of SAC’s teams for their Homecoming event. Due to a few absences, the teams were each one fewer than a full team, fielding only nine players plus a keeper. Regardless, the boys left it all on the field and put forth their best efforts.
Match #1: One LCS squad took on St. Andrew’s Junior Tier 2 team. The boys played an amazing first half. Despite the slick conditions they were making good passes and the keeper, Ross Hutchinson, was saving every shot. Ali Attyani took a strong leadership role by communicating with his team-mates and coordinating plays. The boys held SAC off until the 35 minute mark when they managed to score. Following half, the players maintained their endurance, but St. Andrew’s had abundant substitutes and were constantly keeping their squad fresh. After 25 minutes had elapsed in the second half, St. Andrew’s was leading 4-0. Excitingly, with 3 minutes left, Chris Cameron took a hard shot from the left wing and scored! The final score of the match was 4-1. The coaches would like to applaud the boys on their hard fought effort and for keeping their spirits up. Special mentions go out to Matt Lawes for playing an excellent defensive game, Jackson Harding for playing hard until the end, and Rayan Alfuhaid for taking every chance he had to shoot on net.
Match #2: The second LCS squad met another St. Andrew’s team where the LCS boys experienced a great victory. Despite being down a player and without any substitutes on the bench, the boys were victorious over SAC. The first goal was netted by Chris Moody at two minutes into the game. This goal seemed to set the trend. Goals were scored in the following order:
- Ben Katsof: 9 minutes
- Nico von Schorlemer: 15:30, 68 and 70 minutes
- Paul Bramkamp: 17 minutes
- Rupert French: 38 minutes
- Charlie Hooke-Wood: 50 minutes
The final score of the match was 8-0. Adam Stainrod and Chris Moody are to be congratulated for their excellent performances in net.
As coaches, we would like to thank all of the boys for playing to the best of their ability. As well, we would like to thank all of the LCS parents who were able to attend the matches. It was great meeting all of you!
1st Boys’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Dave Costello, Sam Wilson
On Wednesday, September 24, the LCS 1st Boys' Soccer team defeated Country Day School by a score of 5-1. Goal scorers for LCS were Simon Miller, Salvadore Romero, Craig Stark, Tom Dahler and Thomas Estabrooks. The team came out strong and despite an early goal by CDS the players fought back and never let up until the final whistle blew. LCS dominated the second half of the game and continued to press hard on the attack. The coaches are incredibly proud of how the team started their season - how they played, their effort, and their character.
Jr. Girls’ Basketball
Coaches: Kevin Limeback, Mike Vander Doelen
LCS welcomed Country Day School’s Jr. Girls’ Basketball team for a Wednesday afternoon game. Despite the warm weather outside we attracted a good number of home fans to support the girls for their second game. Our team came out strong like we had something to prove. With quick ball movement and some great offensive rebounding, our girls were able to exploit holes in the CDS defence. We got out to an early lead and held it to half time. In the second half, CDS tightened up on defence and were able to get out on the fast break, resulting in some quick points against us. They took the lead going into the fourth quarter. While our team could have folded, we refused to give up. With increased pressure on the ball we caused some turnovers that resulted in some fast break points of our own. In the end it was some very strong play from the CDS girls that made the difference with CDS coming out on top with a score of 33-24. Both coaches are very impressed with the development of our team and are looking forward to the rest of the season. Great work girls!
