Honouring Truth and Reconciliation Day at LCS

On Tuesday, September 30, our community gathered on the waterfront for a special chapel developed and delivered by our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Club SICs Marcus ’26, Emily ’26, and Riko ’26; DEI Club members Susie ’27 and Leah ’26; and Community & Connect Class members Lily ’26, Molly ’26, and Lexi ’26. Their thoughtful presentation invited us to learn, reflect, and deepen our understanding of Truth and Reconciliation, setting the tone for a day of meaningful remembrance and dialogue.

Across campus, classes found ways to mark the day. In Mr. Van Oostveen’s Guitar and Songwriting class, students typically begin with a guitar-inspired piece of music of their choice; today, however, the class listened to The Stranger by Gord Downie from his Secret Path album—an album and graphic novel inspired by the story of Chanie Wenjack and his residential school experience.

At lunch, our Dining Hall featured a menu inspired by Indigenous food traditions, including scone dogs, wild rice, duck confit, and sweet potatoes. Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange in solidarity, symbolizing commitment to truth and reconciliation. Proceeds from Orange Shirt sales (purchased from Nishtees, a local Indigenous-led organization) will be donated to Right to Heal PTBO, a non-profit dedicated to integrated mental health and addiction support.

This Friday, October 3, will also be a Clean Casual Day in support of the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, a culture- and community-based organization in Peterborough that enhances the quality of life for Indigenous people in the city and surrounding area.

Together, we honour the stories, voices, and resilience of Indigenous peoples as we reflect on our shared responsibility in reconciliation.
