A Community of Care: Honouring Volunteerism at LCS

This National Volunteer Week (April 27 to May 3), we’re celebrating the incredible spirit of giving that lives in our Lakefield College School community. Service is part of life at LCS—it’s how we connect, grow, and support the world around us.

Throughout the year, our students have stepped up in countless ways. Rupert ’26 has helped organize an annual backpack drive for the Youth Emergency Shelter, providing essentials and care to youth in need. Henry ’26 and Ella ’25 both volunteer weekly at the Selwyn Public Library, where they offer tech support and friendly conversation to patrons—often helping older community members feel more confident using their devices. And Lora ’26 recently coordinated a joyful afternoon on campus with the New Canadian Centre’s Youth Group, bringing students together through crafts, games, and connection.

These students represent just a few of the many who are making a difference, both on and off campus.
Each week, students help prepare breakfast at St. Paul’s Catholic School, ensuring young learners start their day with a nutritious meal. Through Northcote Farm, we contribute fresh produce to Kawartha Food Share, and we support food security through donations to the Lakefield Food Bank, Salvation Army Peterborough, and Curve Lake First Nation Food Bank.

We’ve hosted organizations like Jack.org, CMHA, and One City Peterborough to foster dialogue around mental health and inclusion. Even our school musical, Mean Girls, became a platform for advocacy—raising funds and awareness for the National Eating Disorder Information Centre.

From raking leaves for seniors to preparing holiday care packages, our students are always finding thoughtful ways to give back. We’re proud to support a wide range of organizations, including Camp Scugog, Youth Unlimited, Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, Mobile Wardrobe, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more.

At LCS, volunteering is more than an activity—it’s a way of life. And as we mark this week of recognition, we’re reminded that leadership often begins with kindness—and that small, meaningful actions can make a lasting impact.
