Grade 12 Students Step Into the World of Forensics
On Monday, January 19, Ms. Hansler’s Grade 12 Canadian and International Law class had the chance to put their classroom knowledge into action through a hands-on mock crime scene exercise. The activity gave students a realistic opportunity to practice forensic protocols for documenting and processing evidence.
The session began with a walkthrough of the scene, where students surveyed the area, noted environmental conditions, and identified potential points of entry. Students then split into teams, taking on roles for photography, note-taking, and sketching to meticulously document the crime scene.
Hands-on tasks included collecting hair samples, dusting for fingerprints, and creating detailed crime scene sketches to map the location of evidence.
"I really liked collecting fingerprints. It showed me how difficult it was to get a clear print lifted," shared Sophia ’27.
"The overall interactive experience was fun," added Alex ’26. "I learned how to observe the scene and pay attention to details. The more time you spent in the scene, the more you noticed."
The exercise emphasized the importance of observation skills and attention to detail—critical abilities for anyone interested in legal or forensic work. A special thank you goes to OPP Officer Nie and OPP Officer Lester for joining the class and assisting with the simulation.
Following the investigation, students will analyze their collected evidence and prepare presentations for the “police department,” outlining their hypotheses and identifying potential suspects—continuing the hands-on approach to learning that brings forensic science to life.
