On Thursday, February 5, the spirit of adventure and camaraderie once again swept through Lakefield College School as the entire community gathered at Sir Sam’s to celebrate the cherished tradition of Ted Pope Day.
At LCS, connecting with nature and fostering a strong sense of community are values that continue to shape the student experience. Each year, Ted Pope Day brings students, faculty, and staff together for a full day on the slopes — a celebration of winter sports, shared experiences, and the joy of learning beyond the classroom.
This year, the LCS community embraced the tradition with enthusiasm, taking full advantage of one of the most beautiful winter days of the season. Skiers and snowboarders of all experience levels filled the hills, with beginners building confidence and seasoned riders carving their way down the slopes. The day was a vibrant reminder of the energy and connection that comes from spending time outdoors together.
For those unfamiliar with the tradition, Ted Pope Day honours alumnus Ted Pope ’42, who attended LCS from 1939 to 1942. Known for his adventurous spirit, Ted pursued passions that included skiing, mountain climbing, and car racing. After graduating, he served in the Navy and later worked as a television producer for the CBC. Though his life was tragically cut short in 1960 following a racing accident, his legacy of courage, curiosity, and adventure continues to inspire generations of LCS students.
As another Ted Pope Day comes to a close, the tradition remains a powerful reflection of LCS values — community, outdoor education, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. The memories created on the slopes this year will no doubt remain with students and staff long after the snow has melted.
