Grade 10 Canoe Trip: Exploring the Northern Kawartha Highlands
From October 16–18, 35 Grade 10 Outdoor Education students spent three days paddling through the Northern Kawartha Highlands, building on skills developed in their Grade 9 program. The trip, a core part of the double-credit course, gave students hands-on experience in navigation, camping, and backcountry living while enjoying the vibrant colours and crisp air of the Canadian autumn.
Guided by the Outdoor Education team and supported by Grade 12 Outdoor Leaders, students navigated waterways, set up campsites, and completed daily tasks that strengthened both practical skills and teamwork. Evenings were spent around the campfire, reflecting on the day’s challenges and successes.
From mastering map and compass navigation to learning outdoor cooking and campsite management, students left the trip with lasting memories, strengthened confidence, and a deeper sense of community.
The Grade 10 canoe trip is a signature experience of LCS’s Outdoor Education program, offering students hands-on learning that fosters independence, teamwork, and an enduring appreciation for the outdoors.
